Religious wars marked the start of a slow decline. Four centuries later, Po\u00ebt had almost turned into ghost town.<br \/>\nBut life has finally got back to normal, thanks to the determination of a few dedicated people who saved what they could and then brought it back to life. The Friends of Old Po\u00ebt-Laval association, formed in 1926, managed to halt the looting of the neglected village, then provide both the material resources and the manpower needed to renew it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sectionCTA\"><div class=\"strateCTA strateCTA-largeCTA50 wp-caption\"><p class=\"strateCTAThumbnail\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dieulefit-tourisme.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/poet-laval.jpg\" class=\"swipebox\" title=\"\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.dieulefit-tourisme.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/poet-laval.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"strateCTA strateCTA-largeCTA50 wp-caption\"><p class=\"strateCTAThumbnail\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dieulefit-tourisme.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/plaine-du-poet.jpg\" class=\"swipebox\" title=\"\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.dieulefit-tourisme.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/plaine-du-poet.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<h3>Po\u00ebt-Laval of today<\/h3>\n<p>The present Po\u00ebt may be different in many ways from the medieval village it was, but it is by no means a soulless museum : it retains an authentic spirit thanks to a constant collective effort to protect this outstanding site and its natural environment.<br \/>\nThe village of Gougne started to develop in the 18th century, down in the valley on the banks of the Jabron river. These days it is the administrative centre, where the town hall, school and shops are located.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Inhabitants\u00a0 : Po\u00ebt-Lavaliens<br \/>\nPopulation : 941<br \/>\nArea : 31,22 km2<br \/>\nAverage altitude : 307 m<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4>Not to be missed<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dieulefit-tourisme.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/img_7202-e1528206593297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starting point of the trail \u201cSur les Pas des Huguenots\u201d : a European hiking path of 1,800 km (1,120 miles) retracing the historic route of Dauphin\u00e9 Protestants fleeing from Le P\u00f6et-Laval (Dr\u00f4me) towards Bad Karlshafen (Germany) in the 18th century. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surlespasdeshuguenots.et\">www.surlespasdeshuguenots.eu<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Starting point of \u201cTour du Pays de Dieulefit&#8221;, a long-distance hiking trail. Total distance : 100 km (62 miles).<\/li>\n<li>The museum of Dauphin\u00e9 Protestantism (16th century), the castle (17th century), the St Jean des Commandeurs chapel, the Commanderie and the Raymond du Puy International Centre of Art and Animation.<br \/>\nGuided tours of the castle every Wednesday morning in July and August, appointment at 9:30 in front of the castle.
